No, I’m not swearing. MTHFR is a gene mutation that an estimated 40-60% of the American population has. And most people are completely unaware. I have it. And Julie has it, which means my kids have it.
What’s the big deal? The MTHFR mutation has been associated with a huge list of issues. There’s a blood test for it, so check with your doctor or naturopath. It’s not something that’s commonly tested for and until about 2 years ago, I had no idea that I had the mutation. I’ve always had sort of high cholesterol, and my naturopath suggested that the MTHFR mutation might be the cause. Sure enough I have a single mutation. Julie got tested shortly after I did, and she has a double mutation.
I now take a methylfolate supplement and B12 shots as well. One of the things MTHFR can do is inhibit B12 absorption.
So do yourself a favor and get it tested. This one is like getting your hormones checked, it could make a huge difference in your life.
