Sometimes planning out meals and creating a shopping list is a good idea. But other times, it’s good to just go to the farmer’s market, or grocery store, or butcher shop and see what they have.
The last time I went to my favorite local butcher, he didn’t have what I wanted (no hangar steak!) But he had a cut there that I’d never seen or eaten before - Eye round roast. I had no idea how to prepare it but I got it anyway. After bringing it home and searching for recipes I was a bit worried. It’s a very lean cut that if not prepared right, can be very dry, tough and chewy. One recommendation was just to use it for beef jerky. Uh oh.
And then I found a way to cook it that “guaranteed” a good, tender, flavorful eye round roast. And it was quite different from the normal way you roast beef in the oven. I tried it and it turned out fantastic! I’ll be posting that recipe today or tomorrow.
So make your food shopping an adventure and you just might be surprised and find your new favorite food.
