Today's 1% Change: Maximize Your Magnesium

June 9, 2017

This might be something that you haven't given much thought. But magnesium is an important mineral to over 300 metabolic functions in our bodies.

Two things have happened in recent history…

  1. Our soil has become depleted of magnesium because of intensive farming methods. So there's less of it in our foods than there was in the past.

  2. Processed foods, grains and sugars in our diets sap the magnesium from our bodies

So what can you do about it? Three things.

  • Eat foods that are rich in magnesium. Dark green leafy vegetables are great sources… spinach and chard for example. Some fermented foods, like homemade yogurt. Dark chocolate is rich in magnesium too!

  • Don’t eat things that sap magnesium from your body: Sugar, sodas, breads, legumes grains, dairy, etc. Yep. Pretty much all those things I’ve been telling you to avoid anyway. If you do a Google search for foods that are rich in magnesium, things like whole wheat bread and beans will come up. The problem with those is that they also have anti-nutrients that prevent you from absorbing the magnesium that’s in those foods and other foods you eat.

  • Supplement: Especially if you’re an athlete or just very active, I think it’s necessary to supplement. There are several ways you can do this.

    • You can take magnesium pills - Magnesium glycinate is the best form that doesn’t upset your stomach and, um, speed things up too much.

    • You can also use magnesium oil or lotions on your skin. This is especially good and can help prevent sore muscles after a workout.

    • Epsom salt baths. This is another great way to absorb magnesium through your skin and it’s very relaxing as well. Put 2-3 cups of epsom salts in a warm bath and soak.
