Today's 1% Change: Be Good to Your Gut

Okay… I couldn’t resist the picture. But I’m not talking about abs, I’m talking about what’s in your gut.

 

There’s a lot of research being done on the importance of your gut bacteria. There are 10’s of trillions of bacteria in your gut. They communicate with each other. There’s even some research that indicates that gut bacteria is linked to your brain. So “gut instinct” is a real thing. The gut also plays a key role in your immune system. Pretty amazing stuff.

 

But what’s happened with our modern diets is that we’ve moved away from the foods that really nourish the gut: Fermented foods. When is the last time you had sauerkraut? Kimchi? Truly fermented pickles? Homemade yogurt or kefir? (not the supermarket stuff)

 

These are all important foods and you should make them a part of what you eat every day. 

 

As with all packaged foods, you need to be careful if you're buying fermented vegetables. Most pickles and even most sauerkrauts are not fermented. They’re pickled in a vinegar brine and don’t have the beneficial bacteria you’re looking for. If you’re buying fermented vegetables in a jar, make sure that it says “lacto fermented.”

 

I eat almost no dairy, with one exception: I make a batch of homemade whole milk yogurt every week and have some for breakfast. It’s really easy, is lactose free, costs about half of what store bought yogurt costs and is full of beneficial bacteria. I’ll post the recipe and video for that in the next few days.
