Today's 1% Change: Just Say No to Soy

June 5, 2017

Soybeans and soybean based products have been sold to us as healthy. But they are not. There are so many downsides that most people are unaware of.

This really deserves a dedicated article, which is on my list to write, but for now I’ll just touch on a few of the key reasons you should stay away from soy products. I’ll try not to get too technical here, but it’s almost unavoidable.

Unless it’s fermented, soy is an anti-nutrient. (Are you eating tempeh, natto or miso? Probably not). What’s an anti-nutrient you ask? Anti-nutrients are compounds in foods that interfere with the absorption of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in other foods. So when you eat soy, you’re actually blocking vital nutrients from being absorbed by your body.

Soy causes vitamin B12 deficiency. Many people are low in B12 and any soy consumption makes it worse.

More than 90% of the soybeans grown worldwide are GMO… “Roundup Ready”. They’re sprayed heavily with Roundup to kill the weeds around them. So you’re not only eating GMO beans, you’re getting a dose of Roundup. Yes that’s the same stuff you might have used in your yard to kill weeds.

Soybeans have anti-thyroid properties. Many people have thyroid issues and have to take thyroid supplements daily. Soy disturbs thyroid function.

Soybeans contain estrogenic isoflavones (think of them as plant hormones messing with your human hormones). So guys… stop ordering Soy Lattes! Just stop it. And women… you might have heard that soy can prevent breast cancer. Studies also show that it can promote breast cancer.

Soy is also used as an additive in many packaged, processed foods, which is yet another reason that you should avoid processed foods. And soy is fed to feedlot beef. One of the many reasons to always eat grass-fed beef.

I'll stop there. There are many, many more reasons to Say No to Soy.
