This post is a bit different but a lot of us have pets so I wanted to touch on how important it is to consider what you’re feeding your dogs and cats.
The majority of the pet foods out there are not good for our pets at all. They’re full of grains and additives and are not even close to a natural diet for animals. The first ingredient in Purina Dog Chow? Whole grain corn. So do you think your dog’s ancestors ate corn? You don’t see too many wolves scarfing down corn on the cob in the wild. Let’s see… other ingredients include corn gluten meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, barley and whole grain wheat. There’s a little bit of poultry by-product meal and meat and bone meal. In other words, leftovers from rendering plants. Ralston Purina’s website proudly states they use lots of corn in their pet foods and says that “We're not following the trend of swapping grains and corn for other ingredients…”
We’ve been feeding our dog Taste of the Wild food for years. She’s 9 years old, is really healthy and still acts like a puppy. But before I wrote this I double checked the ingredients and was very disappointed to see canola oil. Aargh! It’s really hard to avoid those manufactured oils… even in our pet food! So now I’m on a search for real food for our dog that doesn’t have grains and doesn’t have vegetable oil.
One other comment on Paleo dogs… Just like people, they need lots of movement! Make sure your dog gets out for a walk or run every day. And if you’re looking for a way to get motivated to get outside and walk, having a dog (or even taking a neighbor’s dog for a walk) is a great way to do that.
