Today's 1% Change: Toss That Vegetable Oil

We've been told (really, sold) for years that vegetable oils like canola, corn oil and soybean oil are healthy. But as I mentioned earlier this week when talking about salad dressings, they are some of the most unhealthy things in our foods.

 

Vegetable oils are completely man made industrial products. Made in refineries much like in the picture here. If you want to see the process, here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfk2IXlZdbI. By the way, ignore the marketing comments at the beginning of the video. The comments may have a grain of truth to them, but there's so much more to consider. Like the fact that more than 90% of Canola plants are GMO (genetically modified), Canola also contains trans-fats and the content goes up to as much as 25% when you use it for cooking. Canola oil has also been linked to heart disease, kidney and liver problems and strokes. 

 

So it's time to clean out your cupboards. Toss all the canola oil, corn oil and vegetable oil. And while you're at it, make sure that you get rid of any margarine or "spreads" in your refrigerator. 

 

Next time you go grocery shopping, stock up with coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil and butter.
