These days, we all sit lot. We sit in the car or on the bus or on the train or on the plane. We sit at our desks in our offices. We sit and watch TV or play video games. And it turns out that all this sitting is really bad for us. A recent study indicated that sitting may increase your risk of cancer by as much as 66%. The human body is meant to move, not sit.
So get moving! You can stand on the bus or train. Get off a stop or two early and walk a bit. If you have phone calls at work, get a wireless headset and stand or walk while you’re on the phone. Talk to your employer and see if they’ll get you a sit/stand desk so you can stand at least some of the time. Have 1:1 meetings with co-workers? Do walking meetings instead of sitting in conference rooms. And while you’re watching TV, you could be doing some stretching instead of sitting the whole time. Find ways to move!
