Kitchen Extras

There are some things that make cooking, faster, easier or just more fun. Here are a few that I use frequently.

I've tried to list them in order of "bang for your buck"... lowest cost and highest return.

You might think it's strange that I just said "lowest cost" then I put a $45 item at the top of the list. But I also said "highest return". You've probably noticed that I'm posting a lot of slow cooker recipes. You're not going to get very far with those with out having a slow cooker. This is the one that I use and it's awesome. It's programmable so you set it for the time you need then it keeps your food warm until you get home.

Compared to a metal peeler, this is magic. The blade never plugs up, never gets stuck and stays sharp for a long, long time. $10

A garlic press is a big time saver in the kitchen. No need to peel, smash or slice or dice the garlic. Just put it in the press and squeeze. $8

If you're going to be making some muffins, then do yourself a big favor and get 2 or 3 of these. They save a huge amount of cleanup time. I don't know about you, but I don't really like the cleanup part of cooking. These make cleanup super easy. $10

I've had a little Black & Decker food processor for probably 25 years and it still works great. This looks like a version of what we have. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done. $28

Lemon and Lime Juicer

I call it a lime squisher. I can’t imagine using one of those old juicers where you have to mash down on the lemon or lime with your hand and twist it to get the juice out. This juicer makes it so easy. $20

If you're going to be cooking and grilling meat, having a meat thermometer is pretty important. With steaks and roasts, if you want it rare, the internal temperature should be 130 degrees. For medium rare, 135. So you see you need to be pretty precise. And that's a lot easier with a quick read digital thermometer. This is the one I use. It's only $9

When you cook up all that pasture raised bacon, you won't want a big mess to clean up afterwards. So get one of these splatter guards and save yourself a bunch of clean-up time. This one is made of stainless steel so it's really easy to clean and should last forever. $20
